Math Help for Elementary Students

math homework

There's something about math homework that seems to cause frustration and conflicts between kids and parents. Sometimes the frustration arises because kids can't remember how to do the homework problems. Math is also a problem for parents, becuase much of what is taught in school is not part of what parents do every day. When was the last time you had to calculate a square root by hand?

Fortunately, help is available. Our new math programs provide support for both parents and kids, including clear explanations in the textbooks and high quality online resources.

Math Expressions in K-2

In grades K-2, we use the Math Expressions option that is part of Houghton Mifflin California Math. Expressions has a strong research base, and is a balanced math program that includes computational skills, conceptual understanding, and problem solving. In Math Expressions, children engage in deep discussions about math, building number sense and critical thinking skills.

When you observe a K-2 math lesson, you can see the foundation of the kinds of knowledge and skill that will lead to success in higher math in high school and college. Children report that they like their math lessons, which is a very positive sign. The lessons are engaging and interactive. Our teachers did a great job selecting math materials that challenge high performing kids and provide support for children who do not find math easy.

eGames

There are four online games. In Math Lingo, kids match words and definitions. Rock Hopper is a kid favorite. Kids have to move a frog from a log to a big rock by jumping on little rocks labeled with mathematical operations. To win, the frog's total has to equal the number on the big rock. RoboPacker helps with geometric and spatial awareness as kids maniuplate shapes to tile a large shape. In Find a Friend, kids have to add up adjacent numbers to get a total, making a picture of an animal appear. These games will help kids build math fluency.
