Washington Unified School District (WUSD) serves a culturally and linguistically diverse student population. Approximately 40% of our students come from homes in which the family speaks a language other than English.  About half of these students are classified as English Learners (EL).  More than thirty languages are spoken by our students.

English learners are assessed annually with the state-required English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) in order to determine their level of proficiency in English and monitor their progress toward becoming fully proficient in English.  Students are reclassified to Fluent-English Proficient (R-FEP) when they have met district criteria based on state assessments and teacher and parent input.
