Washington Unified School District has been on the move at a blistering pace since July 1st. Expectations are high to ensure all students in the District are College & Career bound, ready to be the next generation of leaders in our City and across our nation. Just as the community is growing and changing, Washington Unified continues to make fundamental and innovative improvements to meet our deep commitment of serving the students and families of West Sacramento.

New academic standards are being taught in all classrooms that reflect higher levels of rigor and use of technology for student learning. We are part of the state’s new assessment program to ensure our students are making progress in the new standards and 21st century skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity.

Our Visual and Performing Arts programs have expanded across the District beginning with our Transitional Kindergarteners all the way up to River City High School. We unveiled a new Culinary Arts and Farm to Fork Education Program that is a state of the art facility right here in West Sacramento. Chosen out of 411 programs across the state, our River City High School Engineering, Science & Technology Academy has been honored as a 2016 California Distinguished Partnership Academy. We are also opening a new Dual Immersion Spanish Program in August 2016 for the start of the new school year.

It is true: “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child.” We are honored that our voting citizens have entrusted to us the ability to modernize our facilities as an investment to our schools that bring in new families to our City and to ensure generations of students have appropriate learning environments. All of us play a key role in providing an exemplary education for our next generation of citizens and leaders in our City.

We have accomplished a tremendous amount of work on behalf of our wonderful students, and there is plenty more yet to come! We are moving in the right direction, honoring all the traditions and work of the past while preparing for a promising future.

Warmest Regards,

Linda C. Luna, Superintendent
Washington Unified School District
