Via Rideshare Technology

Washington Unified School District (WUSD) has redefined the future of student transportation with the debut of its new WUSD Bus app. Powered by the global on-demand mobility developer Via, which also operates West Sacramento On-Demand, parents now have an app to track the school bus location and when their child boards or exits the bus. The WUSD Bus app gives parents more visibility and transparency through real-time GPS tracking.

First approved by the WUSD Board of Trustees in the spring of 2019 and beta tested with select students last year, the WUSD app is now available for students and parents on select routes and introduced in tandem with the district’s new all-electric zero-emission school buses.

Using the WUSD Bus mobile application (iOS and Android), parents and caregivers will be able to monitor their child’s bus location in real-time and receive alerts about the bus and confirmation when the student has boarded or exited the bus. Students will flag when they board by scanning a school bus pass, either on their mobile device or backpack tag. The WUSD Bus app allows parents, caregivers, school administrators, and WUSD administrators real-time visibility into bus and student location, which is paramount to provide peace of mind and ensure the safety of every child riding the bus.

While the new technology drives efficiencies and offers everyone from parents to district leaders a new sense of visibility, students will maintain consistency in their daily pickup and dropoff times and locations.

WUSD marks the first time Via’s technology is integrated into a school district. Shortly after piloting the service in West Sacramento, the New York City Department of Education also chose Via to power more than 10,000 vehicle school bus fleet. Plus, leading public sector transportation providers around the world rely on Via’s technology, including the Los Angeles Metro, Transport for London (TfL), Sydney’s Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW), and Berlin’s Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG).
