California citizens have a right to access public information maintained by government agencies, including the Washington Unified School District (WUSD). That right is provided for in the California Public Records Act (CPRA) and the state constitution, and it includes the right to inspect and copy records of state and local government agencies.
The CPRA declares that “access to information concerning the conduct of the people's business is a fundamental and necessary right of every person in this state” (Government Code Section 6250).
The WUSD is committed to this same transparent decision-making and records keeping processes. If a member of the public would like to make a request for public records, please submit an email to the WUSD Administrator of Communication and Community Outreach.
Please DO NOT request student records or transcripts from the Communication and Community Outreach Office. Members of the public who have a question on a specific topic or would like access to specific documents are encouraged to contact the appropriate office directly.
If the WUSD possesses the requested records, they will be made available in PDF format.
The WUSD has designated the Administrator of Communication and Community Outreach as its Public Records Coordinator facilitate its responses to public records requests. Please direct your request to the Public Records Coordinator, it will make it easier for us to track and process your request which will result in your receiving a more prompt response.

When a copy of a record is requested, and the record cannot be produced immediately, the WUSD will determine within 10 days after receipt of the request, whether to comply with the request, and shall promptly inform the requester of its decision and the reasons for the decision. The initial 10-day period may be extended for up to an additional 14 days if the WUSD needs to:
Communicate with departments or offices.
Inspect voluminous records.
Consult with other divisions or agencies.
Construct a computer report to extract data.
Whenever possible, the WUSD will provide records at the time the determination is made to disclose them. If immediate disclosure is not possible, the WUSD will provide an estimated date when the records will be available, and will provide the records within a reasonable period of time.
The WUSD will provide access to all public records upon request unless the law provides an exemption from mandatory disclosure. Examples of records exempt from mandatory disclosure under the California Public Records Act include: certain personnel records, investigative records, drafts, confidential legal advice, records prepared in connection with litigation, and information that may be kept confidential pursuant to other state or federal statutes. In most circumstances, when the WUSD removes or redacts exempt information from the record, it will disclose the remainder of the record.
