In the 2022-23 school year, Washington Unified School District (WUSD) launched an all new, and only of its kind in the Sacramento region, Newcomer Center aimed at supporting students new to the country with limited prior schooling and limited English language knowledge.

With a local population of newcomer students increasing faster than in previous years, WUSD’s Newcomer Center embraces newcomer students for the first year in the country and provides targeted instruction on the foundational skills that require additional time and teacher support.

Many Newcomer students have not attended school in the US traditional sense. Additional challenges include learning to navigate a new country and language while using and accessing technology for instructional purposes for the first time. Due to civil and political unrest in their home countries, several of these students, including some in the middle and high school grades, have never had formal schooling before their arrival at WUSD.
