New Community Schools Initiative Brings More Resources & Supports to West Sacramento Families

At the start of the 2023-2024 school year, Washington Unified School District (WUSD) will launch a new initiative called Community Schools. The goal of Community Schools is to improve the academic success and overall health of students and provide a range of services to students and their families, including health and wellness programs, academic support, and after-school programs.

The initiative is a unique partnership between the school district and United Way California Capital Region and is rooted in the belief that schools should be the center of the community. WUSD has a strong commitment to equity, excellence, and empowerment, and the launch of the Community Schools initiative is just one example of the district's efforts to create a more supportive and nurturing environment for all students to succeed academically and personally.

Community Schools Roadmaps

Where will the Community Schools be located?

Starting with the 2023-2024 school year, Community Schools will be located on each of the following WUSD school campuses:

Elkhorn Village School
Riverbank School
Westfield Village School
River City High School

What are the goals of the Community Schools program in the Washington Unified School District?

The Community Schools program in the WUSD is based on four foundational pillars:

Extended Learning and Enrichment Programs,
Integrated Student Support,
Collaborative Leadership, and
Active Family and Community Engagement

How will the Community Schools program address chronic absenteeism and adverse health outcomes?

The WUSD Community Schools Partnership is a strategy for public schooling that organizes school and community resources around student success. It is centered on a whole-child approach: student success is measured not just by academic achievement but through social-emotional development, physical and mental well-being, college and career readiness, and civic engagement.

WUSD is committed to educational excellence and equity through identifying and removing systemic barriers stemming from inequitable practices, policies, and bias. As a school community, our commitment to equity will be achieved by:

Cultivating healthy relationships that create a safe and empowering environment for every student, staff, family, and community member.
Ensuring that all students are provided access and opportunity to resources and relevant educational and life experiences for individual success.
Ensuring that all students, staff, and families are valued, accepted, and supported through embracing and celebrating their individual uniqueness.
Removing the predictability of success or failure that correlates with a student’s social, cultural, or ethnic identity.
