Washington Unified Welcomes New Superintendent
Dr. Dayton Gilleland
David Westin, President of the Board of Education, together with the Board of Education, is pleased to announce the appointment, and the awarding of a four year contract, to Dr. Dayton Gilleland as the Superintendent of the Washington Unified School District. Dr. Gilleland will begin serving as Superintendent of Washington Unified School District on July 1, 2010.
Dr. Gilleland has 30 years of an extensive background in service to public education; most recently serving in an urban, southern California district, of 58,000 students as the Assistant Superintendent in Educational and Student Services. In that position he has gained considerable experience in developing alternative programs for students, raising test scores and balancing multiple budgets. He has a demonstrated history of working respectfully and collaboratively with unions and staff to reach positive outcomes for all parties.
Dr. Gilleland also has strong experiences at the high school levels, having taught and served as a guidance counselor and administrator at that level for more than twenty years. His background in working with students in diverse and complex communities will serve him well as he continues his exemplary career in Washington Unified.
President Westin reported that Dr. Gilleland received a unanimous vote from the Board. President Westin stated, “From a field of 33 strong candidates, Dayton was clearly above the rest. We felt his knowledge, stability and educational values made him a perfect match for our district. After our visit to San Bernardino we were even more convinced he is exactly what Washington Unified needs in a leader. He has my full support.”
Preparations for assuming his new position will begin immediately. He will be working for a period of time with the interim-superintendent to ensure a smooth transition.
